Staying cool but water wise in extreme heat

23 January 2026

With extreme heat forecast over the coming days, we're encouraging our communities to stay cool — and use water wisely.

During heatwaves, water use often spikes. This puts extra pressure on our water treatment plants and can make it harder for them to keep up with demand, particularly in smaller towns.

We’re doing everything we can behind the scenes. Our treatment plants are operating 24/7, storages are kept as full as possible, and crews are ready to respond quickly if there are any issues.

In this kind of weather, we want everyone to stay cool and comfortable — and a few simple choices can help you beat the heat while also protecting local water supplies:

  • Keep showers short and refreshing
  • Only water your garden early in the morning or later in the evening to reduce evaporation
  • Avoid unnecessary outdoor water use
  • Follow the Permanent Water Saving Rules

If you spot a leak or burst water main, please report it anytime on 1300 361 644.
